From evidence to practice – E2Pi has launched

Dr. Gavin Yamey, formerly a Senior editor at PLoS Medicine, and Consulting editor at PLoS Neglected Diseases, blogged here a couple of weeks ago about his new role as the lead for the San Francisco “hub” of a new global health policy project called E2Pi, the Evidence-to-Policy initiative.

E2Pi was launched on April 5th and aims to reduce the gap between scientific evidence and actionable health policies by providing a rigorous assessment of the evidence and extraction of key points that should enable policymakers to act on evidence more quickly. The E2Pi initiative is an international partnership between the UCSF Global Health group (headed by Sir Richard Feacham) and SEEK Development, a global health and development consulting group based in Berlin, Germany.

Sir Richard Feachem, formerly the founding executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, commented that “The gap between available scientific knowledge and its application in solving global health problems is one of the reasons why poor countries suffer such a high burden of disease and premature death.  E2Pi will help to address this issue by conducting rigorous and independent analyses of the available research evidence leading to specific, action-oriented recommendations to policy- and decision-makers.”

Funding for the initiative’s first three years is provided by a $3.2 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
