This week in PLoS Medicine: Pay-for-Performance: Location, Location, Location; Novel approaches to R & D; Maternal health policy in Africa

Three new items were published this week at PLoS Medicine, starting with an article by Jan Blustein and colleagues examining the associations between changes in hospital performance and their local economic resources. Locationally disadvantaged hospitals perform poorly on key indicators, raising concerns that pay-for-performance models may not reduce inequality.

Next, in the search for a novel approach to R&D, Solomon Nwaka and colleagues discuss ANDI, the African Network for Drugs and Diagnostics Innovation, which is intended to help stimulate health research and development on the African continent.

Finally, continuing our series on maternal, newborn and child health in sub-Saharan Africa, Sara Bennett and Freddie Ssengooba discuss the challenges of getting science into policy in Africa, and the existing gap between scientific knowledge and public policy in maternal, newborn and child health. Read the two previous articles in the series by Joy Lawn and colleagues and Robert Black and colleagues and an Editorial arguing that action on maternal health must focus on increasing access to family planning resources as much as it does access to basic medical care.
