This week in PLoS Medicine, four new articles were released.

Catherine Cornu and colleagues performed a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials of metformin efficacy on cardiovascular morbidity or mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes and show that although metformin is considered the gold standard, its benefit/risk ratio remains uncertain.

Alexander Tsai and colleagues show that in sexually active women in Brazil severe food insecurity with hunger was positively associated with symptoms potentially indicative of sexually transmitted infection and with reduced odds of condom use.

Peter Doshi and colleagues describe their experience trying and failing to access clinical study reports from the manufacturer of Tamiflu and challenge industry to defend their current position of RCT data secrecy.

Hans-Georg Eichler from the European Medicines Agency and colleagues provide a view from regulators on access to clinical trial data.
